Oregon 08/2007 - Freelands - Day 3

Another good breakfast at the Timberline Lodge, and we check out the place and the mountain.

Not much snow left, but then it is August.

But there is a little snow as I'm hiking up the mountain.

This art work adorns the front door.

There are many animal cravings inside the Lodge.

The Lobby is a great place to kick back and relax.

As we get ready to leave, Bruno makes an appearance and Catherine thinks he's great. We head south through the mountains and stop at a unique geological feature.

Here we are on the trail to Little Crater Lake.

This is Mount Hood from the Little Crater Lake trail.

This water here at Little Crater Lake is very deep, very blue, and very cold. After this we went down the trail a little farther and came across a trail leading to another lake. Hale, Cynthia, and Jason strike out for this lake and tell Catherine and I that we are to take the truck and meet them there. That leads to the question of where "there" is? When Catherine and I got back to the truck, we got the map out and discovered that the trail did indeed go to a lake, but that there was no road access. I sent that fast White Girl back down the trail to try to find her folks, but they hadn't stopped or turned back. Looking at the map, Catherine and I saw that there was only one place where the trail they were on came close to a road. We drove through the area we thought they might be, but were unsuccessful in locating them. Remember, they had no map, no water, no hiking shoes - and NO SENSE! Well, we got to the spot where the road came close to the trail, I sent Catherine up the trail and providence was with us, as she found them within just a few minutes. They had hiked about 5 miles and had about 5 more to go before the trail would hit a road of any sort.

This is where Catherine and I found our lost hikers. At least they had a beautiful lake to be hiking along side. I guess if they really needed a drink, they could partake of the waters here and hope not to get sick. We now head back toward Portland, with a planned stop to take the waters at Bagby Hot Springs.

We make it to the Bagby Hot Springs trail head. It about a 45 minute hike through the forest, very pretty. When we get to the springs, Jason and Catherine check out the inside of an old growth Douglas Fir.

This is one of the soaking areas. There is a unique flume system to bring hot, and sometimes cold, water to these tubs. Close your eyes, don't look, I'm getting in.

This is one of the private soaking areas.

Saw this scary forest creature on the way out.

Now we head north to pick up the boat.
