The Pacific Northwest finds Freelands and me invading for our annual BIG trip. After flying in to SEATAC, we head south the Columbia River Gorge, which lies between Washington and Oregon.
Most every drop of rain that falls east of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon makes its way to the Pacific Ocean via the Columbia River. This river basically cuts a path through the Cascade range of mountains, hence the "Gorge." Also, this river was used by Lewis and Clark to make their way to the Pacific Ocean in 1804.
Here is the happy Freeland Clan, Jason, Cynthia, Catherine, and Hale. Let's see if I can comment a little here. First, it looks like Jason has a rash or an itch that he is trying to scratch. Second, is that an "adult beverage" Cynthia is holding? Third, why does Catherine - the fastest White Girl in North Mississippi - have such a pained expression on her face - bad smells? Fourth, someone needs to ask Hale why he is hugging that telescope?
Jason is checking out this Visitor's Center that overlooks the Gorge.
Next stop on the Scenic Byway brings us to the waterfalls.
This is the top of Multnomah Falls.
This is the lower falls at Multnomah.
We checked out the Bonneville Hot Springs Resort, but the vibes just didn't seem right, so we moved on toward Hood River.
On the way, we stopped and watched some of the wind surfers. This area of the Columbia River is a world class wind surfing spot. The wind is funneled by the surrounding mountains and through the Gorge.
We stop in Hood River and check out the place. Hood River is a neat town, very focused on outdoor activity. We looked around at the various hotel options, but nothing really seemed right (I was saving the best option for last - I'm tricky that way)
The Columbia Gorge Hotel was just what we were needing to lift our sagging spirits.
Don't they look happy!
And as pretty as the Hotel Gardens.
