Maine 07/2008 Day 5

Our main sail repaired, we depart Rockland make way toward Matinicus Island. There was not much wind, so the crew was not happy.

Welcome to Matinicus. This is the harbor. One of the interesting things about this harbor is that one has to tie up your dingy and climb up a15-25 foot ladder (depending on the tide) to the dock, none too easy for the clumsy folk in our group.

First stop, the Bakery for some homemade ice cream sandwiches and bread.

Along the way, we come upon a cherry tree,

with netting to protect the cherries from the birds.

We also pass a school,

an old home,

that looks like it needs a little work,

then a Gift Shop.

where the folk load up on Matinicus gifts.

Here is our boat (in the middle) from the Gift Shop.

We end our stay on Matinicus by stopping at the self service chowder place: A refrigerator in a resident's front yard, where you pick up quarts of chowder and leave your money. It was great. Sorry, I forgot to get a photo of the frig.
