Oregon 07/2008 KAJ - Part III

We said our "good byes" to Ken and Jordan and pitch in to help with some yard work at the Parkers.

The old grass and dirt removed, then new dirt and a sophisticated drainage system goes in.

Eugene has an ordinance that prohibits any rain that falls on new structures (the Parkers new den) from draining off of the roof and into the street and storm drains (as the rain did before the structure was erected).

The end result is that all rain from new structures must be trapped in an underground tank, then pumped into the back yard so that the rain is not allowed to enter the city's storm drains. Go figure.

Well, enough of that, Parker scores 4 (very good) tickets to the Olympic trials, courtesy of the parents of some of his parishioners, who came up from California for the trials. The tickets for the trials had been sold out 24 hours after they went on sale some 2 years before. These folk take their track very seriously. Our tickets were for hurdles and some relays.

Much like the Kentucky Derby, the athletes march into the stadium.

and then came the guys

Even got to see an Ole Miss Rebel participate.

The hurdles are prepared

On your mark

GO

GO

The runners approach the hurdles

As you can tell, we had very good seats at the first hurdle

Up and over

Asa, what up?

The relays had some excitement.

Those guys could really run

Tyson Gay, a sure bet for a gold medal at the Olympics, tumbled to the ground at the start of his 200-meter quarterfinal heat. Running in the seventh lane, Gay was speeding to the lead in the first turn, but on his 14th stride, something went wrong. He went airborne, fell, then laid on the ground in pain, grabbing his left thigh and grimacing. He is down on the track near the race official with the flag.

Tyson had to be carted off the track – this eliminated him for the 200m. He qualified for the 100m the week before so he will compete in that event at the Olympics, but not the 200.

Asa, are you really wearing a Cal t-shirt to an Oregon track meet?
