Oregon 07/2008 Asa & Graves Day 2

We arrived in Eugene, late of the evening, and sacked out at the Parker house. After sleeping in, washing off the trail dust, and feeling the need for fuel, we head out for eats:

No trip to Eugene is complete without a visit to the Burrito Boy.

After good eats, we head out to tour the city, stopping at the UofO.

With the Olympic track trials going on, access to the campus and athletic facilities was somewhat limited, and we could not get to all of the sites that we would have liked to visit.

We also dropped by the Church House, so that Kyle could take care of a few ministry matters.

Asa leaves his mark in the Cascade Youth Room.

No trip to Eugene is complete without a stop by the site of Steve Prefontaine's death - Pre's Rock. He died under mysterious circumstances in a car wreck on a narrow, winding road, some would say is worthy of an X Files episode, in that there is still much debate as to whether it was a one car or a two car accident.

"Pre" was a legendary track star at the UofO in the late 60's and early 70's, who was known for his guts and determination and enduring pain in order to win. His career was the subject of a couple of movies. His popularity had much to do with beginning the jogging and running craze in the US.

Here are the boys in front of Pre's Rock paying homage to the Runner's Saint.

Folks leave all sorts of memorabilia at the site of his death.
Next stop was the UofO Football facilities.

The O has an interesting origin. The outside of the O is the shape of the football stadium, Autzen Stadium, while the inside of the O is the shape of the track facility, Haywood Field.

This is the outdoor practice facility.

And the indoor practice facility.

Ken hurt his back, we won't go into what he was doing when he injured himself, but we got him a massage to relieve his tensions. Unfortunately, it did not do much to help.

We leave Eugene, head east and stop at Cougar Reservoir.

Asa climbs down to the water.

Asa and Jordan climb up the hill for a better view.

The boys climbed down, with Ken's help, and we made our way up to the Hot Springs.

On the way we passed a water fall and lagoon.

Next stop was Hidden Lake for some swimming - close your eyes, don't look. The water here is snow melt, and it wasn't very long ago that this water was solid white.

Asa looks a little chilled here, doesn't he?

Jordan survived swimming in the cold water.

Ken looks a little stiff as he jumps back on the log. His back was giving him fits, but he still got in the water with the guys - no swimming photos though.

Now it was time to find a camping spot. We found a great spot, right on a river. Ken started cooking.

The boys learned how to set up the tents and camp site and gathered wood for a fire.

They learned very fast and were a big help.

Good eats. Thanks to Ken. Some action shots of the boys in action.

Asa wears those same clothes for 3 days.
